Interview Questions

Whenever a candidate accepts an interview that person should be ready to ask questions of the prospective employer as well as provide well thought out answers about his or her background.

Below is a list of questions recommended to ask a potential employer. Although your recruiter may provide some of the answers to these questions, it is important to thoroughly discuss the depth of the position and the company. These qualifying questions offer a guide to unveiling important information that will help the candidate in making a good impression as well as collecting necessary information to make a well-informed decision.

Questions to ask an employer:

  • Please describe the position and responsibilities.
  • Why is this position available?
  • Why are you hiring from outside the company?
  • What is the biggest challenge of this position?
  • Please describe a typical day on the job.
  • How many people have held this position in the last 5 years?
  • What would you expect of a new employee in the first 90 days?
  • How are the goals and objectives established for this position?
  • Please describe your management style.
  • What is your background?
  • What is your company's "value proposition" for employees? For customers?
  • Please describe the internal support for this position.
  • How is this position currently performing and how has it performed in the past?
  • How many people have been promoted in this position in the past 5 years?
  • How does the competition sell against you?
  • In terms of competition, who is your biggest competitor and why?
  • What is your overall market share?
  • Please detail your product line in terms of volume.
  • What are the company's long-term goals?
  • Please describe the career path associated with this position.
  • Please expand on the training program for this position.
  • What kind of mentoring program exists within the company?
  • Has there been any recent downsizing within the company?

At the conclusion of the interview be sure to ask:

  • At this point of our discussion, do you have any further questions or concerns about my background or capabilities? (Be sure to allow for an adequate response and welcome a discussion should the interviewer initiate a conversation about concerns and/or potential deficits.)
  • When are you looking to hire for this position?
  • What is your interview process?
  • May I meet some of your employees to ask questions?
  • Based on our interview, am I going to advance to the next stage?
